Why America Should Care That Russia Has INVADED Georgia
Posted 16 weeks 2 days ago byOnce upon a time the world knew by heart the risks of appeasement. The world knew what it meant when a dictator said he would "protect" groups of people of his ethnic background living in other nations at all costs. Of course the world learned what all of this meant in the wake of WWII.
As of today, a total of four days have passed since the Russian invasion of Georgia. So you may ask who cares? Some unknown country is being invaded by the Russians. It matters because the same thing happened seventy years ago! We need to remember the past or risk repeating it all over again.
Seventy years ago Germany invaded a little known, and insignificant nation, called Czechoslovakia. Germany then was the military powerhouse Russia is today. Why did Hitler's Germany invade this small nation? Because, as Hitler put it in his eloquent way, the German people there were being oppressed and belonged with Greater Germany. That is all. All he wanted he stated was to protect the Germans in the Sudenland. Ok, said Europe. Go ahead. We dont want any more war. Germany conquered ALL of Czechoslovakia and left it at that. The West did nothing until Germany invaded Poland, another insignificant nation.
Russia today is proclaiming to protect an ethnic group related to Serbs, the ethnicity of Russians, fro mthe big bad Georgians. Of course that means they have invaded not just those parts which have the ethnic minority they seek to protect, but as I type this they are proceeding to the capital of Georgia. Oops. Well, that kind of stuff happens. The Russian Prime Minister, Putin, has already made sure that the power of his small group of ex-KGB diehards control Russia and now they want to flex their muscles.
Georgia is a sovereign nation with a Democratically elected governement, which is a lot more than can be said about Russia. They have supported us with troops in Iraq. When the rest of the world hated us, Georgia, small as it may be, decided to support our endeavour with troops. That's saying something coming from such a small nation.
Now the President of Georgia is asking for world help. We should not turn our backs on this ally. Nor should we allow this aggression to go unchecked. This is only the beginning. Russia will not stop at taking over all of Georgia. There are plenty of ex-soviet Republics that they would love to control. And in case this all means nothing to most people, it should be noted that Georgia is FULL of oil. Yup, Russia, a leading producer of oil - SOMETHING PEOPLE DONT SEEM TO KNOW- just is about to acquire a lot more of the stuff from Georgia.
Remember Hitler? One of the main reasons he invaded Russia back in 1941 was to get to the rich oil fields of the Caucuses - the very spot Georgia occupies today. In fact, gas prices will start going up once again thanks to the Ruskies invasion and only God knows when this rise will stop because the Russians seem intent on staying there.
Dont believe me? The invasion force seems to be made up of hundreds of tanks and many thousands of soldiers. Such an invasion force takes time to assemble. The Russians had been planning this for MONTHS! Forget diplomacy with their neighbor, what they want is their neighbor period. It wont stop there. The World leanred that in 1939 and looks like if we do nothing now, the world will learn that leason again very soon.
AND I need to add one more final thought....as one CNN reporter already mentioned, for YEARS John McCain has talked about looking into Ex-Prime Minister-now silent dictator-Putin's eyes and seeing KGB written all over them. Reporters would laugh and just set it aside. Afterall, Bush and most of Congress felt that Putin was a sane agreeable man. It turns out they were all wrong and McCain was right. Come November I hope we elect the man who say the potential for such disregard for the sovereignty of a Democracy instead of the man who has no foreign policy experience whatsoever. The stakes are too high to elect a novice like Senator Obama. We don't need any apeasement of the Russian bear, and I tell you that when I look into Senator Obama's eyes I see Neville Chamberlain all over again.

Give peace a chance

Do you think Vladimir and George are less friendly now? Maybe Barry and Vlad will get along too.
Obama wants to cut the
Submitted on August 12th, 2008 by BeoObama wants to cut the military and get rid of our nukes. If Obama gets in, he will talk to Putin et al. He thinks that you can have discussions with these people. His eloquent speech making might go over here, but Putin with chew him up and spit him out. Obama is not capable of dealing with this man. This is not the time to "make history" by electing a man who has no experience. Maybe next time around, but not now. We cannot afford to make that mistake when the "Bear" has been awakened.
at the moment
Submitted on August 13th, 2008 by John 2000I see it more as forced compromise than a Russia win. It may cost Russia in the long run since they have used up a good amount of credibility, and maybe woke Europe more to the nature of the bear.
How it plays out from here will continue to be interesting for quite a while.
Russian Bear Win's This Round
Submitted on August 12th, 2008 by AnonymousLooks like yet another empty promise given by a U.S. President.
Gerogia might as well reunite with the the Russian Bear.
America get's a slap in the face by Russia.
Should have seen it coming, Bush = Mouse, Not Man!
After earlier this year promising to help countries near Russia, telling them they had nothing to fear U.S. and it's ALLIES would back them and support them. Bush get's a chance to back up his word's and instead he run's away with his tail between his leg's.

soul-mates in fact!
Submitted on August 12th, 2008 by John 2000It is absurd to consider this conflict as having been a surprise development to Vladimir's soul-mate George unless one considers George to have been out-of-the-loop on this - which I do not.
Vladimir
Submitted on August 12th, 2008 by rom12921"...Vladimir, that's what I call him..." - President Bush.
One of my favorite quotes from the President in discussing Putin. I've been somewhat amused and a little disturbed by it.
First of all...Of course you would call someone by name.
Second, it indicates a close, informal relationship. While it may put our leaders at ease, I would think it wise to 'keep your guard up', George.
If you grew up with apocalyptic thoughts of nuclear devbastation and participated in drills to duck and cover, you may be more inclined 'keep your guard up'
Younger folks probably think its just silly paranoia. Just vote for Obama, he can work it out.
It is always good
Submitted on August 12th, 2008 by John 2000to review some of the viewpoints being presented in the Russian press, whether you might view it as complete propaganda or not. One thing that is clear is that the St Petersburg Times has a different flavor from the Moscow Times.
Tuesday Aug 12 St Petersburg Times
http://www.sptimes.ru/
compared to some noteworthy articles from The Moscow Times:
Georgia Set the Perfect Trap:
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/article/10...
Russia Expands Into Georgia Proper
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/article/60...
One of the more interesting passages in the second Moscow article is:
""Medvedev, meeting the leaders of the State Duma factions in the Kremlin on Monday, cautioned the West not to flirt with "aggressors."
"I will remind you that history has plenty of examples of pacifying an aggressor. Western countries were engaged in this 70 years ago," Medvedev said, referring to the Munich agreement of 1938. The agreement, signed by Germany, Britain, France and Italy, "untied the hands of the Hitler regime" to annex and occupy part of the former Czechoslovakia, he said."
So Medvedev would be comparing tiny Georgia to Nazi Germany? ... and also to Saddam Hussein ?
Comments like those tend to knock any credibility out of most of the other arguments and portrayals built up in the upper part of the article. It smacks of madness.
Senator McCain had it right
Submitted on August 11th, 2008 by BeoSenator McCain had it right all along about Putin. Obama's initial remarks today were that we should all show restraint. (Can't we all just get along?)Who, besides, Russia, the invader, should show restraint? Georgia? Wow, he could not come up with a response on his own because he was on vacation and his handlers weren't close by. He had a more mature response a few hours later after he was able to get briefed. McCain was on top of it from the get go.. He was giving the briefings. Obama is just too green and he should not be running. He is not a terrible guy, and maybe, if he had followed his own advice about getting some experience before running for president, he would have been a more viable candidate in a few years. His arrogance and pride took him to a place he was not prepared to go.
Please remember
Submitted on August 11th, 2008 by HamiltonRussia now has well over 14000 tactical nuclear war heads most of which can reach the United States of America. We have just at 5000 tactical nuclear war heads and Barack Hussein Obama promises to get rid of, immediately, what we have left. You go America; Russia is really no threat to anybody in the world. Let’s elect a man who will ask for world permission to defend ourselves and when that permission is denied, we will just pass away. But the world will really, really like the American Republic of Russia.

Submitted on August 11th, 2008 by John 2000McCain is the only one that has it right.
The simpering 'condemnations' will not turn out to be the correct responses. Russia has made up it's mind because it knows how freaking limp and weak the west, particularly Western Europe, really is. There is no way in hell that 'we' did not know that this was coming down the pike (er pipe). Oh sure, run to the worthless craphouse UN and condemn. We know that routine.
For Russia to pull back now, some very big concessions will have to be given. They like the smell of one world dreamers, because it smells more like complete failure every day.
I hope I am wrong. Congratulations, Mr Putin, you are correct in your assessment. George, go back to Beijing. UN, NATO, EU! GO TO HELL! bunch of pissants.
COLD WAR DEAD ?
Submitted on August 11th, 2008 by AnonymousLook's like the Cold War is Alive and Well.
Latest new's I got on this subject look's like Russia going after Oil Pipeline. This pipeline supplies U.S. with oil if Russia takes it, Oil and Gas will once again go up.
Sad thing is so few really pay any real attention to what is going on in the World Today.
Which makes it all the more easier for Independent's who own and run thing's like, Dare I say Federal Reserve to push the war aggenda.
War is done for profit, No Money is made from Peace.
So dust off the NUKE'S. The Big One maybe right around the corner.
